Nurse Practitioner (NP) Admitting Toolkit

Resources for NPs, managers, and other health care providers admitting to hospital, long term care, and other health care settings.

About

NPs are regulated health professionals who must adhere to the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) practice standards. In accordance with NSCN standards, NPs are authorized to practice to full scope. This full scope now includes admitting patients to hospital as relevant to their practice setting and scope of employment.

The use of NP admitting in other Canadian provinces has shown several benefits to the health care system, including:

  • Making full use of NPs' knowledge and skills.
  • Providing timely access to care.
  • Improving continuity of care in rural and remote communities.

This guide provides information on the implementation of NP admitting in Nova Scotia, including:

  • Provincial legislative changes
  • Clinical decision support tools
  • Resources for use in practice settings
