Incorporating Canada’s Food Guide into Your Educational Content

Health Canada’s recommendations now focus solidly on eating a balance of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and protein-rich foods. To support better cardiovascular health, among other health outcomes, the new guide gives plant-based foods a higher priority than animal-based foods.

Canada's Food Guide ©Health Canada

In early 2019, Health Canada released a new (mobile-friendly) guide to nutrition, after keeping its recommendations for a sensible diet unchanged for over a decade. The changes to Canada’s Food Guide are substantial, with a move away from the traditional concept of four food groups. The Guide is part of Health Canada’s healthy eating strategy, which aims to help Canadians make healthier food choices by informing the public about sugar, salt, and saturated fats in our diets, among other goals.

Creating & Sharing Content about Nutrition
Canada’s Food Guide is easy to access online (along with lots of fascinating info on the historical development of this key resource). The friendly URL for the guide is easy to link to and share: https://food-guide.canada.ca. Sharing the link instead of attaching a copy of the PDF guide to an email will ensure your colleagues always access the most up-to-date info.

It’s also simple to find additional current best-practice information about diet and nutrition on Library Services’ Dietitians & Dietetic Technicians subject guide. Library Services’ staff keep the subject guide up to date, and all NSHA staff are welcome to send suggestions for new resources to asklibrary@nshealth.ca. The guide includes evidence summaries and clinical practice guidelines, and also highlights key books and journals on nutrition and food in NSHA’s library collection.

Patient Education Pamphlets

Looking for related patient education information? We currently have over 50 nutrition-related patient pamphlets in our collection. If you have worked on one of our existing nutrition pamphlets and haven’t yet revised it to reflect the new Canada’s Food Guide, send the Pamphlets Team a quick email to get the process started. We’ll be happy to support you in updating your materials.

Remember: All staff and physicians have a role in advising patients and families on nutrition. You’ll benefit from reviewing the new guide and becoming familiar with the changes, whatever your role. Connect with Library Services for assistance with incorporating Canada’s Food Guide and supporting resources into your educational content.
