Nursing Orientation Program – Central Zone

Outcomes

At the end of Module 1: IV Therapy, participants will be able to:

  • List and locate available medication resources to support safe IV therapy
  • Identify and explain client- and situation-specific rationale for IV site selection and venipuncture site selection
  • Demonstrate accurate/successful IV initiation and venipuncture in a simulated learning environment as per policies and procedures
  • Have their first exposure to the operation of an IV Pump according to organizational competency checklist.
    Note: You will not complete the checklist during this session; this will be done during unit level preceptorship
  • Review potential benefits and risks of CVAD therapy while in hospital 
  • Manipulate equipment/supplies used during the following CVAD competencies, as applicable to scope of employment:
    • Flushing
    • Needle-free connector changes
    • Blood specimen collection
    • Initiating IV therapy
    • Dressing change and securement
    • Removal
