At the end of Module 3: The Ins and Outs of It, participants will be able to:

Parenteral Nutrition (PN)

  • List indications for PN
  • Explain the monitoring and stopping/starting protocol associated with administering PN
  • State potential complications associated with administering PN
  • Explain the documentation process associated with PN
  • Describe the process required prior to initiating PN
  • Identify resources available regarding administering PN

Enteral Nutrition (EN)

  • Describe the safety parameters for administering EN:
    • Initial and ongoing placement verification
    • Methods to prevent microbial contamination
    • Methods to prevent aspiration
  • Discuss how to assess a patient’s tolerance of EN
  • Explain the consideration for medication administration as it relates to EN
  • Identify equipment required for administering EN
  • Identify resources available regarding administering EN

Nasogastric (NG)/Percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy (PEG) Tubes

  • Identify a patient who is able to receive enteral tube feedings
  • Describe the difference between NG tubes and PEG tubes
  • Demonstrate ability to insert small-bore feeding tube as per Nova Scotia Health policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate how to safely secure NG tubes
  • Describe methods for checking NG tube placement (X-ray, pH, measurement)
  • Describe the intervals for ongoing placement verification (pH, measurement, continuous feeds, or proton pump inhibitor (PPI) interaction)

Chest Tube

  • Identify indications and purpose of a chest tube
  • Describe the different types of chest tubes
  • Demonstrate a chest tube assessment and documentation
  • Describe interventions required for chest tube complications
  • List available resources that can be applied to practice

Percutaneous Drain

  • Identify the indications and purpose of different percutaneous drain types
  • List available resources for percutaneous drain management in their practice setting

Ostomy Care

  • Identify indications for a patient requiring an ostomy
  • Differentiate between stoma types (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy, loop, end)
  • Describe and perform a stoma assessment, including documentation
  • Review and practise ostomy appliance application, including documentation
  • Review complications related to ostomy care and describe management strategies, including documentation
  • Identify resources for ostomy care, including patient education resources

Stool Management System

  • Identify indications for a patient requiring a stool management system
  • Review stool management system procedure for insertion, maintenance and removal, including documentation
  • Identify resources for care and maintenance of a stool management system, including patient education resources
