Additional precautions are required when a resident is infected with a microorganism for which transmission cannot be prevented with the use of Routine Practices alone. Additional precautions are always used in addition to Routine Practices.
Some microorganisms can be transmitted through more than one route, in which case more than one type of Additional Precautions may be required.
Nova Scotia Health’s IPAC Disease Index for Long Term Care serves as a quick reference when determining precautions to take either empirically or when a specific etiology is known.
