Part of the Provincial Action for Health Plan

The Office of Addictions and Mental Health, Nova Scotia Health, and IWK Health have a mandate to provide services that are more accessible, integrated, proactive, compassionate and measurable.

Universal Mental Health and Addictions Care – Solution Six

Our plan involves investments in new and strengthened service delivery models, providers, and introduction of coverage that will improve access to supports and services.

Partners with a Shared Goal

Our goals for Universal Mental Health and Addictions Care represent what we have heard through conversations with caregivers, people with lived experience and their families, community groups, professional associations, government partners, and others who have contributed their voices to a vision of the future of mental health, wellness and addiction care in Nova Scotia.

We are committed to representing the diversity of our province and acknowledging the importance of equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation and accessibility in shaping the wellness of Nova Scotians.

Our Commitment

Mental health and addictions supports and services that are effective, trusted and accessible to all children, youth and adults living in Nova Scotia.

Our initiatives are focused on improving mental health and addictions care in ways that make supports and services more accessible, integrated, proactive, compassionate and measurable.

Our Improvement Areas

Nova Scotians have told us that:

  • The timeliness of service needs to improve.
  • We need to improve the experience when services are accessed.
  • Our service providers need more support for their own wellness, and for their ability to recognize, assess, and provide effective intervention, especially to assist those in crisis.
  • Communities need to be involved in the design and delivery of supports and services to ensure they are inclusive and culturally appropriate.

Our Goals

  • People and families will have timely, high-quality, accessible care, and more help getting to the right supports matched to their needs.
  • Service providers will have supports to foster wellness, more opportunities to access information, knowledge and professional development, and work in an integrated system that encourages the building of partnerships.
  • Individuals and communities will be supported in a way that is equitable and inclusive, and recognizes unique concerns, with a focus on wellness and prevention, and mental health and well-being education.

Our Team

Changes are happening through teamwork among government departments, Nova Scotia Health, IWK Health, private providers, community-based organizations, people with lived experience and their caregivers and families.

Our Progress

We are currently designing and providing new services and changing existing services. This work will continue through 2024 and beyond. We will continue to evaluate and further adjust the changes implemented.
